Ayr fixtures on 29 & 30 April cancelled

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has today announced that Ayr's Flat fixtures on 29 & 30 April have been cancelled. This is due to areas of Ayr's Flat track not being raceable.

The BHA will seek to re-allocate these fixtures to other racecourses in line with usual procedure and will provide an update on this in due course.

Explaining the situation, Clerk of the Course Graeme Anderson said:

"As part of a programme of ongoing investment we have been carrying out drainage work in the home straight for the long term good of the track following issues in recent years.

"We have a relatively short window to complete major works and unfortunately with unseasonably low temperatures in the past few weeks it has meant the course has not recovered at the rate we would like.

"Naturally we are hugely disappointed that areas of our Flat track will not be raceable for our fixtures at the end of April but human and equine welfare is paramount to and we will never seek to compromise safety in order to achieve a quick fix or outcome."

Provisional changes to Taunton's race programme for 24 April

The British Horseracing Authority has today announced two provisional new races at Taunton's fixture on 24 April. This is because, in light of the current going and weather forecast, the ground may not be suitable for the two steeple chases currently programmed.

The current going description at Taunton is currently Good to Firm and watering, with limited chance of showers in the forecast between now and next Wednesday. As such two hurdle races have been provisionally programmed. Entries for these two contests as well as the six existing races will close at 12 noon, Thursday 18 April.

A decision will then be taken as soon as it can be to see if the original six-race card can go ahead, or whether the two existing chases are replaced by the two new contests.

Declarations will be made as usual by 10am on Tuesday 23 April. Full race details and conditions for all existing and provisional races, as well as further fixture information, will be available via the BHA Racing Admin site www2.racingadmin.co.uk shortly.

Provisional changes to Exeter's race programme for 9 April

The British Horseracing Authority has today announced two provisional new races at Exeter's fixture on Tuesday 9 April. This is because, in light of the current going and weather forecast, the ground may not be suitable for the three steeple chases currently programmed.

Exeter’s ground is currently Good to Firm, Good in places with limited chance of showers in the forecast between now and Tuesday. As such a National Hunt Flat race and a hurdle race have been provisionally programmed. Entries for these two contests as well as the seven existing races will close tomorrow at 12 noon, Wednesday 3 April.

A decision will then be taken on Sunday morning to see if the original seven-race card can go ahead, or whether the three existing chases are replaced by the two new contests to make a six-race card. This would then mean the team there will be able to focus the watering on one course only rather than have to water two courses in order to provide safe jumping ground.

Declarations will be made as usual by 10am on Monday 8 April.Full race details and conditions for all existing and provisional races, as well as further fixture information, will be available via the BHA Racing Admin site www2.racingadmin.co.uk shortly.

Paul Johnson, Head of Racing at the BHA, said:

Given the extraordinary circumstances of recent days we were acutely aware of the number of horses that will be needing to run next week throughout all levels of the horse population. As such, we have moved as quickly as possible to add six fixtures next week across both codes.

"Race programmes at these fixtures are being finalised but will reflect feedback from trainers received in recent days and weeks.  Coupled with increased flexibility on divisions at many racecourses, the aim is very much to ensure that suitable opportunities exist for those horses that need them

"Our thanks go to the Horserace Betting Levy Board and the racecourses involved for their help in staging these fixtures so quickly."
